Back to the Future

by Jenni Bevis-Lacey

Back to the Future.

Back to the Future is the name of our re-engagement scheme where we help people at risk of loneliness and further isolation by visiting and accompanying them out and about.

Loneliness and social isolation is a huge problem among older people and others who find it difficult to get out and about.

Who is back to the future for?

Many people in the local area live on their own and there may be times when they feel the need for a volunteer visitor to come and chat with them. It may be a result of a

  • Bereavement
  • Stay in hospital
  • Change in circumstances
  • Spell of depression
  • House move

The reasons may vary, but the opportunity to chat with someone can often help to overcome the problems of the moment and enable people to get their lives in order again.

If you know of anyone who could benefit from this service please contact Options Manager, Hayley Malcolm on 023 8090 2416 or email hmalcolm@1community.org.uk

We often have volunteer opportunities appearing on our site but this is something different. So if you are a friendly person, why not give this some thought?

Have you got a couple of hours or more? You could volunteer for us and visit someone who is older and or has a physical disability.

Volunteers visit a client at home for an hour or two, to chat to someone who finds it difficult to get out of the house and finds themselves feeling lonely. Our aim is to support the client to re-engage with their community, by perhaps going to a lunch club, do their own shopping, with the aim of them going out on their own.

Being a volunteer visitor is a very flexible role, with visits arrange at the mutual convenience of the volunteer and client. It is a role that fits around any other commitments you may have.

While volunteers are welcome from across the borough, volunteers are particularly needed in the Southern Parishes of Botley, Bursledon, Hamble, Hedge End, Hound, Netley and West End to meet the needs of local people.

Training is given and full support and supervision are provided, with mileage expenses paid at 45p per mile.

If you are interested, please contact our Volunteer Centre on 023 8090 2458 or email volunteer@1community.org.uk
