Written by Jean Roberts-Jones, One Community Chief Executive
One day I shall blog about a week in the life of a Council of Voluntary Service, Chief Executive; but recently I have had a few delightful experiences such as attending both the Fareham and Eastleigh Mayor Making events.
The Mayor is the Borough’s ‘First Citizen’ and is elected annually by fellow councillors for one year at the annual meeting of the Council in May. The Mayor chairs the full meetings of the Council and normally takes a non-political role to ensure fair play.
In addition, the Mayor also represents the Council as the Civic Head of the Borough at official functions and attends approximately 400 events during the term of office. At functions in the Borough, the Mayor takes precedence over all other citizens. The only exception to this is when Royalty or the Lord Lieutenant are visiting the Borough.
The Mayor can also play a key role for community groups and they really enjoy being invited to open events, tea parties, and to present awards. In June, One Community are hosting numerous events to celebrate volunteering and have invited local Mayor Councillor Des Scott (Eastleigh) and Councillor Connie Hockley (Fareham) to join us.
There are numerous reasons to do so:
- A photo opportunity for the local paper and any online press or social media
- Recognition for your service users or volunteers by the Borough Council of their involvement
- Help a local councillor to understand and appreciate all the hard work done by their local community. If they attend on average 400 events, that is a lot of community activity and a vibrant community is a safe one, a place people want to live.
Asking a Mayor to attend is easy, it’s free and can reap rewards. And don’t forget if the Deputy Mayor is visiting instead they will be looking out for their charities of the year for when they are in office.
So we are very grateful to The Mayor of Eastleigh, Councillor Des Scott for choosing our Carers Centre this year as one of his charities.
If you would like the Eastleigh Mayor to attend a function or you would like to arrange for a group visit to the Parlour please contact the Mayor’s Assistant on 023 8068 8134, email Janice.firstname.lastname@example.org or write to:

If you would like to invite the Fareham Mayor to an event, please fill in the online Mayor invite form and submit it at least 14 days prior to the event, the sooner the better. If the Mayor is unable to attend, the Deputy Mayor will be asked to attend.
