Halifax Community Giving Extra Award for One Community Staff Member

by Joanne Miles

KylieWin2One Community Researcher, Kylie Barton is the successful winner of a Halifax Community Giving Extra Award 2016. Kylie received her award certificate, rosette, and £300 in vouchers for herself last night (9th February 2016) at the Young Carers Youth Club she regularly volunteers for.

The awards take nominees from right across the country. Over 2000 applied in the South East region alone, and only 66 local winners were picked from around the UK. Nominees’ cases were put before a panel of Halifax Community Ambassadors who whittled the numbers down until they found their winners. [Read more…]

Young Carer’s sing at Football Club’s Star Awards

by Joanne Miles

Written by Amie Simons, Hampshire Young Carers’ Choir Coordinator, Eastleigh Young Carers Project

The Star Awards is a celebration of the Saints Foundation, which is an star awards performaceindependent charity aligned to Southampton Football Club, and in particular the achievements of some of the charity’s participants who have worked hard to change their own and other’s lives for the better during 2015.

It therefore seemed fitting that this year, One Communities very own young super stars were asked to perform at this prestigious event. The Young Carers Choir, which began in June 2015 with thanks to a grant from Youth Music, comprises of 14 Young Carers from across Hampshire, including Eastleigh, Romsey and Winchester. During the month of December, they worked alongside other young musicians from Newtown Studio’s, including MC’s, drummers, saxophone players and guitarists, to put together a fantastic performance for the Saints Foundation awards ceremony which was held at St Mary’s Football Stadium.

The Star Awards performance, which took place on Tuesday 15th December 2015 and was to an audience of over 100 people, can be viewed here. We are very proud of the young carers who were involved. It was wonderful to see their confidence flourish throughout the rehearsals and the enthusiasm and spirit was amazing.

Researcher boycotts Christmas to raise money

by Joanne Miles

Picture 2One Community Researcher, Kylie Barton, has this year decided to forgo the festivities to raise money for a cause close to her heart.

Kylie Barton, from Eastleigh Hampshire, took the decision when the charity she volunteers for, Eastleigh Young Carers, lost £120,000 worth of funding. Kylie cites several reasons for her decision, including the commercialisation of Christmas, that it is a holiday for those who follow religion, and quite simply because she doesn’t need any more ‘stuff’.

Eastleigh Young Carers is a local project supporting 8 -18 year olds who are caring for a family member with a disability or illness. We have been working in the Eastleigh Borough for over 16 years. Our aim as a project is to improve Young Carers lives by providing opportunities for respite, to meet others in a similar situation, and take some time out of their caring role. We have over 150 Young Carers registered on the project, and from census data and research we know that this is just the tip of the iceberg within Eastleigh Borough.

Kylie has also recently been nominated by colleagues for the Halifax Giving Extra Community Awards for her time contributions to the project.

Kylie said:

“There are others in this world far more in need than me, including the amazing and inspiring young people I volunteer for. This is why this year I am doing things a little different, and am urging others to do the same. Instead of wasting money on toiletry sets that never get used, yet more socks, or an amount of sugary treats we shouldn’t even consumer in a year let alone a few days, I am asking people to give whatever money they were planning on spending on me to my chosen charity. In return, I am asking those who I would buy presents for which charity they would like me to donate to in their name. People have been more than happy to take part and think it is a lovely idea.”

If you would like to help Kylie on her quest, you can donate to Eastleigh Young Carers (part of One Community) here (make sure to leave a message saying it is for Kylie’s Young Carers Christmas appeal).

You can also read the full story as featured on the Huffington Post here.

JANUARY UPDATE – Kylie raised a total of £420 which will be used to transport 13 young carers to a week-long residential trip in Devon, giving them a holiday they wouldn’t have had otherwise.
