Eastleigh Remembers WW1

by Jenni Bevis-Lacey

Eastleigh Remembers WW1.

On Saturday 15th of September there was something amazing in Eastleigh. We remembered WW1 and the part Eastleigh played 100 years ago.

Due to the sheer volume of casualties, the injured service persons were shipped first to Netley. Because they were full, hundreds were transported North to Eastleigh and the Leigh Park was used as a major clearing hospital.

There were a number of re-enactment groups and several stalls from military groups as well as several from the local community. You could pick up a copy of the Gospel of St John like the ones issued to the troops in the trenches from HOPE Eastleigh. RAF cadets and the British legion amongst them. The music and dancing were very entertaining and drew large crowds.

One Community had a stall and other than the tombola and information about volunteering opportunities, the colouring and dressing up areas were the most visited. Children, parents and others had a go and we had lots of giggling trying on the hats.

Thankyou to our staff, volunteers and those who came along for helping on the day and making it such a success.

Eastleigh Pride 2018

by Jenni Bevis-Lacey

We have had such an awesome day at the first ever Eastleigh Pride!

Lots of raffle tickets sold for the 40 possible prizes including a holiday, tickets for the pantomime and a spa treatment. The draw is on the 16th of September and we can’t wait to let our lucky winners know what they’ve won.

With some fabulous music, dance performances and glorious RAINBOW colours on a grey September afternoon we at One Community enjoyed being a part of Pride.

Special thanks to our volunteers and staff for their keen selling raffle tickets and sharing our healthcare questionnaire and of course to ALL the people who took part and enjoyed a free lolly.

Eastleigh Borough Council and the Mayor celebrate One Community at 40 years!

by Jenni Bevis-Lacey

Eastleigh Borough Council, Mayor’s Tea Party celebrating 40 years of One Community.

tea party, volunteers and staff together

On the 27th of July 2018 a group of staff, volunteers and associates of One Community went to the Point in Eastleigh to celebrate our 40th anniversary. It was a hot and sunny day and we all enjoyed cakes, sandwiches, tea and coffees together and listened to some good speeches about how Eastleigh Borough Council and One Community do work in partnership. In front of our representatives the mayor and the council explained it has become more of a mutual respect and friendly relationship, to the benefit of the people of Eastleigh and surrounding areas.

It was a lovely way to spend an afternoon and we were particularly glad to have been nominated to receive a cheque from the council from their own staff charitable giving.

If you would like to see more, please check out our facebook page.

The Untapped Career Prospects in Care

by Kylie Barton

career-111932_640Written by Solomon Kumuyi, Home Care Services Manager One Community

The aspiration of almost every young person is to choose a progressive career path in life and to move as high as possible.

As a young man, I started my career as a chemist, then I moved into customer relations and then to IT. During my post-university time of serving the Nation in Nigeria, I was privileged to lead a charity organization that supported the less privilege in the society – the motherless babies, inmates in the prisons, and disabled children. Putting smile on their faces. The vision to improve my skills in the world of IT and business brought me to UK and during my studies I worked as a part time Healthcare Support Worker, assisting the elderly, young, and disabled people in the community. Work experience musings…

by Joanne Miles

work experience should be about more than shredding

Work Experience should be about more than shredding

Written by Jean Roberts-Jones, Chief Executive, One Community

Work experience is often a student’s first time in a work place. It provides them with invaluable insight and experience as to what to expect after leaving full time education. It can also help them consider different career paths, and experience different elements of working.

This week I was joined by an enthusiastic young student from Barton Peveril College who approached One Community for some work experience as part of her business course. She will be with me for another 5 weeks, every Wednesday morning, so it will be quite challenge for me to find her meaningful tasks. I want to help her understand the range of day to day operational activities which happen to allow One Community to function. [Read more…]

Getting back to Nature

by Joanne Miles

community-gardenWritten by Kylie Barton, Researcher, One Community

There has been a rise in popularity of the community gardening scheme of late, with people of all ages realising the benefits of reconnecting with nature. A new UN report shows that local organic gardening is the only way to feed the world! With allotments becoming harder to come by, with a waiting list of over two years at present in Eastleigh, there is an increasing need for innovative solutions to allow vulnerable people access to green spaces.
